Schoolhouse Blueprint- Back to School Tags

This is back to school week for all the kiddos here in my area, from elementary to high school, and even college for big kids, like mine. The last few days have been a whirlwind, getting Pete set up in Richmond for medical school…. and just this weekend setting up Nik in her new apartment right off campus. Life has been filled with toting and hauling, packing and bending, and sorting and organizing and cleaning. I hardly know if I’m coming, or going. But happily, both of my peanuts are settling in nicely to their new digs.

It doesn’t seem to matter how old my kiddos get…. I still like to send them off with little treats on their first days. And I’m always a sucker for pretty packaging, so perfect excuse to break out these adorable Schoolhouse Blueprint stamps by Tim Holtz and create a few back to school goody bag tags.

A good ol’ apple is just iconic for back to school, don’t you think? These cuties were stamped in black Archival ink onto tags die cut from Mixed Media Heavystock paper, and then watercolored with Distress inks. I am a committed Brushed Corduroy fan girl, but I challenged myself to use some different colors here, and I’m so glad I did. After hearing Tim Holtz say his favorite color of Distress is Old Paper on a recent Facebook live episode, I had to give it a try with this background watercolor wash, followed up by a bit of masking and stenciling. I really love how that touch of green in the color coordinates with my apple theme.

I added a touch of red Distress glitter to the highlights on the apples, and finished up with some simple A B C’s. I think we’re ready for school to begin!

Thanks so much for all your sweet comments and support on my last posts. It sure is tough on this old mamma to have her cubs move away. But I’m so proud of them, too. Bittersweet moments!
Hope to get caught up with all of you soon!

Valentine Monsters with Sizzix

Hello, hello friends, and happy Valentine’s Day! Any special plans with your sweeties in the works for today? I’m having more of a “Galentine’s” crafty day with a gal pal today. Laughing and crafting, maybe coffee and treats, sounds like my kind of day. And I couldn’t let the day pass without creating some little goody bags for my two Valentines. My kiddos may be all grown up now…. but who doesn’t like a few sweet treats, right?

Of course a treat bag needs a good tag tie. So I pulled out some of my favorite dies and lots of pretty new Distress Oxide inks to whip up my tags for this year. Who says monsters are only good for Halloween?

To create these tags, I die cut and layered two tag shapes together from the Tim Holtz Tag die set, die cutting an oval shape from the center of the second tag. I used a layering stencil on the top tag, ink blended in my all time favorite Valentine color palette of pink and brown. I used the same colors to create a smooshed ink background for the window opening, and then added those silly pieced monsters. Those guys really make me smile.

I hand-cut polka dots to add to my monsters, and hand-cut hearts, too. I am crazy about Ranger’s Opaque Crackle Texture Paste these days, so that was rubbed into the corners and spots. A bit of Distress Crayon really brings out the great cracks and texture. I added dots of Glossy Accents to the eyes. The sentiments are stamps from my sweet friend, Emma, at My Creative Time.

Hope you all have a wonderful Valentine’s Day! Thanks so much for stopping by!

My Creative Time 67th Edition Release Week- Stitched Favor Box

Hi everyone! It’s sneak peek week over at My Creative Time for their 67th Edition Release, and I am so excited to be joining in on the fun with a special guest designer project. Today is the last day of peeks, and Emma is showcasing a new gift-packaging die called the Stitched Favor Box.

These favor boxes are absolutely adorable on their own, or can easily be dressed up to match any theme or event. I added a bit of ribbon through the top slit of the box, and accented with a hand-stamped tag. That sweet rose is from the Jr. Rolled Flower Dies, and the tag is from the Fun Stitched Tag Dies…. both previously released sets from Emma’s collection. The sentiment is from the new Sea You Soon stamp and die set, available tomorrow. The paper is from an older collection from Authentique called Harmony.

Seeds of Kindness with Therm O Web

Hello Friends!
Happy Friday!

Did you all know that March is National Craft Month? A whole entire month dedicated to all the crafty peeps out there, like you and me! I don’t know about all of you, but that sounds like a month I could sink my teeth into.

If I had to describe myself in just a few words, “crafty” would definitely be one of them. Over the years, I think I’ve tried just about every craft out there, some with much more success than others.  You all already know that I’m crazy for paper. And crazy for fabric, too. And recently, I’ve jumped back into jewelry again. As a matter of fact, I’m having the girls over for a jewelry making party soon.

This month, Therm O Web is hosting a very special party for National Craft Month, with awesome sales promotions, free shipping, a photo a day challenge on Instagram, and of course… lots and lots of amazing prizes. Be sure to follow Therm O Web on Instagram to play along, and check out their Facebook page for all the details! You won’t want to miss out on all the fabulous loot they are giving away!

No automatic alt text available.

I’m joining in on the fun today with a project I shared on the Therm O Web blog this week. A sweet little spring-inspired gift idea, flower seed pocket pouches. Perfect for all those spring birthdays on your list, or that special gardener in your life.

These happy pockets are made with lots of oldies but goodies from my stash. Papers from BasicGrey. Dies from Brenda Walton for Sizzix and My Creative Time. And of course a bit of shiny bright Deco Foil, too. If you’d like to learn more about these seed pouches, you can find the full tutorial on the Therm O Web blog.

Thanks so much for stopping by, Friends! Hope you all have a wonderful weekend! It’s going to be beautiful here again….. but I’m pouting. Colonoscopy prep starts for me this weekend. Talk about a Debbie Downer!

Sizzix Tutorial- A Crazy Dog Valentine Tag

Happy Monday, Crafty Friends!

And Happy Valentine’s week! Tomorrow is the big day and we’re almost out of time, but today I am sneaking in with one final Valentine project. I’ve got a little last-minute gift tag topper to share, made with my favorite Crazy Dogs and Things from Tim Holtz.

This silly sweet gift tag is perfect for tying onto a simple treat bag or box. I punched a hole in the top of the tag, and tied it onto my goody bag along with a pair of decorative pencils. Or just tuck the tag into an envelope and it makes a great shaped card idea, too.

These silly dogs make me smile, every time. Love that there are lots of fashion accessories and extras that coordinate with this line that can be used for all the different holidays and occasions.

I added heart accents to my tag, and some pretty PhotoPlayPaper Valentine paper, to dress up this little holiday goody bag. I’ve got a quick Sizzix tutorial to share how, so let’s take a closer look.

audreypettit-sizzix-crazydogsvalentinetagtut11. Die cut a heart frame from patterned paper. To die cut the frame, nest two Hearts Framelits dies, and die cut using this standard Sizzix die cutting sandwich for Thinlits and Framelits dies:
Magnetic Platform, Standard Cutting Pad, paper, Framelit dies (cutting side down), Standard Cutting Pad.

2. Die cut the largest heart shape again from both white cardstock and watercolor paper. You should now have two solid heart shapes and one heart frame.

3. Dab a variety of Distress Ink colors onto a non-stick craft mat and spray the ink with water. Press the smooth side of the watercolor paper heart into the ink mixture. Allow the ink to dry, or speed up the process with a heat tool. Repeat this step to intensify the color, if desired.

4. Place a stencil over the inked heart, and apply a darker color of Distress Ink using an ink blending tool.

audreypettit-sizzix-crazydogsvalentinetag-tut25. Stamp a dog image and Valentine greeting onto watercolor paper using black archival (waterproof) ink. Die cut the dog using the matching die. Cut the sentiment into a thin strip, and then snip the ends into banner notches.

6. Watercolor the dog image using Distress Inks.

7. Apply a thin bead of liquid adhesive to the edge of the inked/stenciled heart shape. Adhere lace trim to the edge of the heart. Make small snips into the lace to allow it to bend around the tight corners easier.

8. Apply red Distress Ink to the edges of the patterned paper heart frame and the sentiment strip. Adhere the frame to the inked/stenciled heart. Add foam adhesive to the back of the dog and sentiment strip, and adhere them to the tag. Stamp and die cut a heart candy box. Watercolor the image, and adhere it to the tag base. Add Glossy Accents to the dog’s eyes and collar, and to the bow on the heart.

audreypettit-sizzix-crazydogsvalentinetag-tut39. Using a bone folder or scoring board, score across the top left corner of the heart die cut from white cardstock. Bend the flap back and forth a bit to loosen the hinge. Apply strong adhesive to the flap section only, and adhere the two heart shapes together. Now you have a tag or a card with room for a handwritten note inside.

10. Punch a hole in the top left corner of the tag. Thread with twine and tie onto your gift package.

I hope you all have a super sweet Valentine’s Day, my friends!

Sizzix Tutorial- A Masculine Gift Set

Hi, Crafty Friends!

Today I have a Sizzix tutorial to share and a project idea for creating a masculine birthday gift set.

My Dad has a late October birthday, and he happens to be a lover of candy corn, like I am. So I knew I wanted to put together a matching card and candy corn treat package set that was both masculine in design, and fall inspired. Perfect excuse to break out one of my all-time favorite Tim Holtz sets, Leaf Blueprints.

I think the blueprint style of this set works so well for masculine projects, and I love that you can change the feel of the season with this set by simply changing out the color palette. Since he has a fall birthday, I pulled out a variety of Distress inks to suit, and added in lots of natural kraft for a warm autumn look.

I’ve got the full tutorial to share, so let’s take a closer look.

audreypettit-sizzix-leafblueprintmakeawishset-tut11. Stamp the leaf blueprint image onto watercolor paper using Potting Soil Archival Ink.

2. Place a Stitched Rectangle Framelits die onto the image, and die cut using this standard Sizzix die cutting sandwich for Thinlits and Framelits dies: Magnetic Platform, Standard Cutting Pad, paper, die (cutting side down), Standard Cutting Pad.

3. Dab Distress inks onto a non-stitch craft sheet and mix inks with a bit of water. Apply clean, clear water onto the watercolor paper around the image to help the color flow, and then drop the ink colors onto the paper.

4. Allow the watercolor to dry. Then spritz the paper with a Distress Sprayer to create water droplets. Allow to dry for a few seconds, then blot the paper with a towel.

audreypettit-sizzix-leafblueprintmakeawishset-tut25. Stamp the leaf image again onto kraft cardstock using the Potting Soil Archival ink. Apply a bit of brown Distress ink onto the image using a mini ink blending tool. Then die cut the leaf using the partial leaf dies from the set.

6. Die cut both sections of the kraft leaf. Adhere one portion onto the watercolor panel. Save the second half for the treat packaging.

7. Stamp the leaf image again onto text print patterned paper. And die cut both halves.

8. Nest two Stitched Rectangle dies together to create a frame. Use the same size as you used for the leaf panel and the next size larger. Hold them together with a bit of washi tape, and die cut the frame from kraft cardstock. Adhere the text leaf print onto the watercolor image. Save the second half for the treat package.

audreypettit-sizzix-leafblueprintmakeawishset-tut39. Emboss a 4.25″ x 5.5″ panel of kraft cardstock with the Diamonds embossing folder. Adhere to a top folding card base, and round the two bottom corners.

10. Swipe a Picket Fence Distress ink pad over the raised embossed areas and around the edge of the leaf panel. Add a strip of matching text-print paper to the bottom portion of the card.

11. Die cut the label from the leaf set from watercolor paper. Stamp sentiment in the brown ink. Edge with Distress ink and add a few splatters of ink color using a wet paintbrush.

12. Wrap twine around the bottom of the watercolor panel and tie into a bow on the left side. Adhere the panel to the card base using foam adhesive. Adhere the sentiment over the twine using additional foam adhesive. And finally, add a few enamel dots.

Use the leftover die cut leaf pieces to create a matching panel for the treat packaging. All of the remaining steps are the same, although I added my treat panel onto a Tim Holtz Postage Stamp Frame die for the base of the hang tag.

Thanks so much for stopping by! And huge thanks for all your sweet comments and support on the opening of my Holiday Shop! You guys are the BEST!

Wicked Spooky Halloween Treats with Sizzix

Happy Monday, Crafty Friends!

Today I have a wickedly spooky Halloween sweet treat idea to share, made for the Sizzix blog featuring favorite new Alterations dies and Idea-ology bits and bobs from Tim Holtz’s amazing 2016 Halloween release.

There are a couple of seasonal treats that we look forward to each year. For me, it’s candy corn. And pumpkin spice lattes. For my Missy Nik, it’s pumpkin cookies by Little Debbie. Usually they are in all the stores at this time of year, but for some reason, this year they’ve been harder to find. A perfect candidate for some special treats to tuck into her work lunchboxes.

I love packaging ideas like this for their ease and simplicity. These matchbook-style pocket sleeves come together really quickly, and are a great idea for making in bulk. Better yet, they can be made in many sizes to fit any number of sweets or small gifts you have on hand.

I really love peek-a-boo packaging. And these adorable new Halloween Mixed Media dies by Tim Holtz are so perfect for creating cut-away windows, giving just a hint at the goodies inside. I dressed my containers up with a bit of twine and new Idea-ology spider charms and Curiosities ephemera cards, and topped them off with sentiment banners made with the new Halloween Words Thinlits.

Quick and easy, and oh-so spooky cute! I’ve got the full step-by-step tutorial up on the Sizzix blog, if you’d like to learn more.

Thanks so much for stopping by! Wishing you all a very spook-tacular day!

A Nestled Gift Set with Authentique

Happy Friday, Friends! Today I have a gift set to share that I made for my father’s birthday last week using Authentique’s pretty fall collection, Nestled.

I know what you’re thinking. Candy corn, right? People have rather strong opinions about it, it seems. You either hate it, or you love it. My dad and I….. well we happen to love it. And since his birthday falls one day before National Candy Corn day on October 30th, I thought it would be the perfect treat to slip into his package.

I really love the prints in this Nestled collection. So perfect for a fall birthday, and really great for a masculine design, too. I added in lots of black to make everything pop, and kept my design simple, with rustic touches. The leaves are from a pair of old wood-mount stamps. I colored the stamps with Distress markers, stamped them onto watercolor paper, and then blurred the images a bit with a wet paintbrush. A coat of Distress Crackle Paint gives them some extra interest and shine.

I used lots of stamps and dies to complete my set, from Papertrey Ink and My Creative Time.  I do love how it turned out. And I’m proud to say I did manage to keep my mitts out of the candy corn, too! 😀

Thanks so much for stopping by! Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!

Sizzix Tutorial- Beware Spirits Treat Tags

Happy Monday, Friends! Today I have another Halloween project and a quick Sizzix tutorial to share for creating some spooky sweet treat tags made with leftover die cuts.

AudreyPettit Sizzix JackTags
If you’re planning to package up baked goodies or candies this Halloween, these adorable jack-o-lantern gift tags are for you. They are seriously so quick and easy to put together. And they look great on any package, too.

AudreyPettit Sizzix JackTags2
Better yet, I like to call this a “two-fer” project, because you can make two separate things from the one pumpkin die I used today. Talk about your time saver!

AudreyPettit Sizzix JackTags3
I added a cool textured background to my tags using the new Cobwebs Texture Fade from Sizzix and Tim Holtz, then topped it all with a spooky chit chat sentiment sticker. Love that little bit of extra detail. But in a time pinch, these pumpkins look as cute as can be even layered onto a simple black tag. And that I love even more.

AudreyPettit Sizzix SpookyWishesOrnie Tut10
Do you all remember this Jack-o-Lantern ornament I made recently for my Halloween Haunted House luncheon? At the time that I was die cutting and inking up these pumpkins, I suggested saving the negative pieces leftover from the face for another project. While I had the wet ink still on my craft sheet, I went ahead and colored all the face pieces, and set them aside. And today, that is what I’m starting with.

AudreyPettit Sizzix JackTags tut1
Here are my leftovers, die cut from watercolor paper and inked with Spiced Marmalade and Ripe Persimmon Distress Inks.  Certainly too cute to throw away, right? If you missed that part and would like to see how I made these, check out my tutorial here.

AudreyPettit Sizzix JackTags tut2
Pre-made tags are great, but there’s nothing better than being able to die cut your own from whatever paper you wish. For these tags, I die cut some black patterned paper from Authentique’s Moonlit Halloween collection using Tim’s Tag & Tie Bigz die. I love Authentique paper for this because it’s got great texture and a white core that shows really well with embossing and sanding.

To die cut with Bigz dies, use this standard Sizzix die cutting sandwich: Standard Cutting Pad, Bigz die (cutting side up), paper, Standard Cutting Pad. Then run this sandwich through your Big Shot die cutting machine.

AudreyPettit Sizzix JackTags tut3
Place the die cut tag inside the Cobwebs Texture Fade embossing folder and run it through your machine using this sandwich for embossing: Extended Multi-purpose Platform opened to Tab 1, Standard Cutting Pad, embossing folder with paper inside, Standard Cutting Pad.

AudreyPettit Sizzix JackTags tut4
Sand the raised embossed pattern with a sanding tool to expose the white core of the paper.

AudreyPettit Sizzix JackTags tut5
Add foam adhesive to the back of the jack-o-lantern face pieces…

AudreyPettit Sizzix JackTags tut6
…. and adhere them to the center of the tags. Top with a holiday chit chat sticker and add twine.

AudreyPettit Sizzix JackTags4
SO simple, right? 😀

To the One Who Holds My Heart

There’s talk of more snow and ice falling in our area over the next few days. Being the good girl that I am, I’ve already been out to the store to pick up my requisite loaves of bread….so we should be good to ride out the storm in relative ease. The only possible trouble being that with ice, oftentimes comes a loss of power. And no power, of course, means no internet, and no blogging…and that is no fun. So just in case, just to be prepared, here’s a pre-scheduled post for ya today. And here’s to hoping I’m happily parked on the couch right now, watching the Olympics!

AudreyPettit Thermoweb AuthentiqueValentineTreatSo this week is all about Valentine’s Day, and today I have a sweet treat to share with you that I made using goodies from Authentique, our product partner this week on the Therm O Web blog.

AudreyPettit Thermoweb AuthentiqueValentineTreat3This is the adorable Smitten collection, and as you can see, I’ve used another of the fabulous Deco Glitter Dust Frames from Therm O Web. This time, one of the Polaroid-style frames in silver. Such a great way to call attention to my focal point sentiment on this little sweet treat package.

AudreyPettit Thermoweb AuthentiqueValentineTreat4I love the look of sweets packaged up in glassine bags. It’s fun to get a small peek of what’s inside without giving away everything.  My only problem is I don’t often have the size bags I need on hand, especially when I’m interested in packaging some larger sweets, like this full-sized candy bar and long lollipop sticks.   Fortunately, it’s super easy to create your own custom treat bags using parchment paper and strong adhesive, like Therm O Web’s SuperTape.

AudreyPettit Thermoweb AuthentiqueValentineTreat5

I’ve got the complete step-by-step tutorial up on the Therm O Web blog, if you’d like to learn more.

AudreyPettit Thermoweb AuthentiqueValentineTreat2I’m giving this little sweetie to the Missy Nik, and am hoping she will be my Valentine this year. Maybe with a bribe like this for candy, she’ll agree!

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friends! Wishing you all a wonderful day!
