Tim Holtz Seasonal Mica Distress Crayons Release

Did you happen to catch the news yesterday? New Tim Holtz Seasonal Mica Distress Crayons are here! Like the Distress Mica Sprays that came out last month, these new crayons are limited edition colors with an amazing pearl mica finish. There are four sets, for a total of twelve amazing new colors that are perfect for all of your seasonal makes… or for a rainbow of fabulous colors that work all year round. I had lots of fun creating some projects for the surprise mid-week reveal, and I’m excited to share the first of them here with you today. Since Halloween is right around the corner, let’s start with this Halloween gift tag.

If you’re not familiar with Distress Crayons, you’ll definitely want to watch yesterday’s replay on Tim’s blog or YouTube channel where he demos many tips and tricks for working with this medium. The fun thing about the crayons is that they can be used in many different ways, and I tried to show that in this tag make. One way you can use them is to create gorgeous blended backgrounds, like this wicked web pattern here. Best tip for a smoothly blended background is to coat your paper with Distress Collage medium first, and let that thoroughly dry. I stamped the spiderwebs from the Stamper’s Anonymous Tangled Web stamp set over my coated tag using Black Soot Archival Distress ink. Then you can scribble on the Mica Distress Crayons and blend the pigments out with a damp finger. For this tag, I used the Bubbling Cauldron and Jack O’Lantern Mica Crayons to create this two-tone Halloween design.

You can also color directly with the Distress Crayons, and that is what I did on the scalloped border strip and die cut lettering. And as one final touch, I doodled directly onto the die cuts to add some detail to those, too.

Monster Mash with PhotoPlay Paper

October is here! My favorite month of the year! Time for pumpkins and leaves and all things Halloween. So what better time to share a card that I made for PhotoPlay Paper with their adorable new Halloween collection for the year, Monster Mash.

This card is a very quick and easy design with background patterned paper and a 3×4 journaling card from the cut-apart kit paper. I layered the journaling card onto some contrasting paper, using my old Tim Holtz Stitched Ovals die set to cut negative scalloped borders across the top and bottom of the panel. And then for additional accent, I added one of the removed scallop strips across the center of the card, along with a twine wrap and bow.

And last, but not least, a pair of cardstock sticker characters and sentiment strip finish off the design.
Happy Friday, crafty friends! Thanks so much for stopping by!

Tim Holtz Sizzix Halloween- Pumpkin Patch Colorize

Hello, crafty friends! Now that fall is officially here, it’s time to share all things spooky! And today I have a spooky sweet fabric project to share that I made for the Tim Holtz Sizzix Halloween release… a small pillow tuck made with Tim Holtz Eclectic Elements fabric and felt and the new Pumpkin Patch Colorize die set.

Now Tim has released lots of pumpkin die sets over the years, but this new Colorize set is a true favorite. In this set, you receive two different jack o’lantern images and two different bats, each with multiple layers that you die cut and stack for a real 3D appeal. I love that the dies come with base shapes, and then pieces that you layer to build up the design. You can see that I used yellow felt for the base here, and then stacked three shades of orange felt and two shades of green felt for the stems. And a little tip, if you don’t have enough colors of felt (or even paper, for that matter), you can add Distress ink to the felt to change the shade. For this project, I only had two colors of orange felt, so I inked up the felt with Rusty Hinge Distress ink to make a third, darker shade.

The felt I used is from Benzie Designs, and it really does die cut beautifully. Therm O Web Sprayn’Bond Fusible Adhesive was really helpful for adhering all these pieces together, without the need to sew. I fused the pumpkin and bats to a backing of Abandoned Eclectic Elements fabric and used a row of pom pom trim to create a grassy border. A bit of Distress-dyed seam binding was added in a bow, and vintage rick-rack trim was sewn around the border.

I love this time of year! Happy Fall y’all!

Tim Holtz Sizzix Halloween- Costume Party

Happy Saturday, crafty friends, and thanks so much for stopping by! It’s now September, and those of you have been following me for awhile probably already know what that means…. this is the time of year when my brain turns to all things fall and my favorite holiday of all, Halloween. Today I wanted to share one of the projects that I made for the Tim Holtz LIVE Sizzix Halloween reveal. This spooky sweet 5×7 desk frame features new dies and new limited edition grit paste and glitter from Tim’s Halloween release.

Can you even resist these cute little characters? This trio is from the Costume Party Thinlits die set, and it is the latest in the Colorize line. If you’re not familiar with Colorize, it’s basically layers of dies that you build up following the color code stamped on the back of each die. I used a combination of Kraft Stock cardstock and Distress-inked watercolor cardstock to build my trick-or-treaters, and I love how the mix of surfaces adds contrasting visual texture to the finished design. And for even more fun, I used the special limited edition Nightfall Glitter from the Distress Sparkle Set for some sparkly accents on eyebrows, eyes, and hair.

The background of the frame is Distress watercolor cardstock that has been inked with Victorian Velvet, Stormy Sky, and Chipped Sapphire Distress Oxide. I masked the moon from an older set, Gate Keeper, and inked around the mask with Fossilized Amber Oxide to add the warm glow of the moon. I watercolored more oxide over the scene using a thin paintbrush, and that created the windy swirls that you see. Then splatters of Picket Fence paint create the look of stars.

The little die cut bats are also from the Gate Keeper die set, and I added in stamped tombstones from the old Village Graveyard set. I believe the graveyard set has been discontinued, but there are tombstones in the new Halloween Vault set that could be substituted. I cut the ground freehand from kraft stock cardstock, and swiped it with a bit of Distress paint to add color contrast and depth. The frame itself was painted with a combination of Picket Fence and Black Soot Distress paint, which was then sanded to remove some of the paint before adding the fabulous Crypt Distress Grit Paste from the limited edition Halloween Texture Set. The Grit Paste was sanded, too, and the whole finished result gives that fabulous aged, time worn appearance I truly love at Halloween.

Have you started on Halloween crafting? Have a favorite from the Tim Holtz release? I’d love to hear!

An Unfortunate Ending with Ranger Ink

Happy Wednesday, crafty friends! I’m back today with a spooky fun Halloween project share that I made for the Ranger Ink blog this week featuring new dies from Tim Holtz and the amazing new Distress Ink color, Crackling Campfire.

This is the Skelly Colorize Thinlits die set from Tim Holtz, and it is by far one of my top favorite sets from the 2020 Sizzix Chapter 3 release. This set has so much incredible detail in all the layers. It really is amazing what can be done these days with dies. I used a mixture of Distress kraft stock cardstock and Distress watercolor cardstock to build my skull, and finished off with lots of Distress ink, crackle texture paste and grit paste for a really grungy, been in the ground a long time, finish.

The 5×5 card base is layers of cardstock and patterned paper. I used ink, spray, and stencils to create the worn background you see, using a combination of my favorite brown and grey Distress inks mixed with the new Crackling Campfire. I absolutely adore how you can get bright orange, like the bouquet flowers I sprayed and coated with Distress glitter, or more rusty orange, like the background… or even the soft pastel orange of the mummy cloth bow…all from one color of ink.

I’ve got the full step-by-step tutorial for this card over on the Ranger Ink Project Page, if you’d like to learn more.

Day of the Dead with Tim Holtz

Happy Monday, crafty friends! Today I am so excited to share with you the first project that I made for the Tim Holtz Sizzix Chapter 4 release for 2020. Chapter 4 is a smaller release, but it is mighty! The Chapter 4 sets are a continuation of the fall and winter seasonal release started in Chapter 3. There is a little bit of fall, a little Halloween, and a bit of the holidays, too. My favorite set from the release is the Day of the Dead Colorize set, which I’ve used here to create a home decor piece in a 5×7 frame.

Look at all the amazing detail on these Day of the Dead characters. I love his guitar that snugs perfectly into his outstretched hands, and I just adore how it looks like she is dancing. I used muted earthy colors of Distress cardstock mixed with lots of stark black to build my couple. The new Engraved 3D embossing folder was used to add texture to her skirt and dress collar. I added Idea-ology bones and an inked bouquet flower to add some festive touches to the scene.

Day of the Dead pairs brilliantly with the Gate Keeper set from Chapter 3, and that is what I used to create the gates and add the moon and bats to the sky. I wrapped rusty wire around the gate posts to add that broken down feeling of disrepair and age you’d find in an old cemetery. Moss glued to the bottom of the frame gives them a nice carpet for dancing. The sentiment comes from the Idea-ology Halloween Clippings stickers. And of course the night time sky was made from Distress ink and paint splatters.

Do you have a favorite set from the Chapter 4 release? If you haven’t had a chance to see it all yet, be sure to check out the full post on the Tim Holtz blog.

Thanks so much for stopping by! Wishing you all a wonderful week ahead!

An Oct 31 Trick or Treater with Sizzix

Happy Wednesday, crafty friends! You all know that my favorite time of year is here when it’s time for fall and Halloween makes! Today I’m super excited to share my first Halloween project of the season… an October 31 Trick or Treater card that I made for the Sizzix blog featuring new dies from the Tim Holtz Chapter 3 release.

This little guy is seriously too cute to spook, though, isn’t he? He is from the fabulous Trick or Treater Thinlits set, definitely one of my top faves from the Halloween release. I’ve mixed Trick or Treater together with the new spider web and the alphanumeric shadow numbers sets, also from the Chapter 3 release, on this fun design.

I made this card  taller and skinnier than a standard A2 size for something a little bit different, and created a simple stamped background layered on cardstock for the card base. The new spider webs have such amazing detail. I added one at top and one at bottom to really extend the length of the design.

I’m definitely ready for a break in this heat, buy boy does it feel crazy that summer is starting to slip right by. Both of my kiddos are back at school, though, so I know it’s true.
Thanks so much for stopping by! Wishing you all a wonderful day!

Boooooo Happy Halloween with Ranger Ink

We’re coming down to the wire, friends! Halloween is just days away. But last minute as it is, I’m back with one last Halloween project for the season. This time, a pair of haunted gift tags that I made for the Ranger Ink blog.

I just love these two silly ghosts, don’t you? They are from the Frightful Things die set from the Tim Holtz Sizzix Chapter 3 release, one of my favorite sets from this year’s holiday release. I paired the ghosts with spiderwebs from the same set, and popped them all against crisp black tags for contrast. The negative spaces were filled in with letters from the Alphanumeric Labels die set, inked in soft lilac Distress for a classic Halloween color combo.

These will be so cute tying up some Halloween goody bags for those special spooks. Happy Halloween, everyone!

And as always, I’ve got the full step-by-step tutorial for this project up on the Ranger Ink project page, if you’d like to learn more!

Tim Holtz Sizzix Chapter 3- Cauldron Bigz

Hello crafty friends! I’m back today with another project that I created for the Tim Holtz Sizzix Chapter 3 release. As you may remember, I was given a special secret assignment for this release to create some fabric projects using the new dies. And today I’m here to share the last of my Halloween inspired fabric creations…. this time, a spooky witch’s spell pillow made with the new Cauldron Bigz die and the fabulous Handmade alphabet font.

Of course Bigz dies are perfect for using with thicker materials like the wool felt and fabrics I used here, and one of my favorite things about using fabric with die cuts is the ability you have to manipulate the pieces. Because fabric has give, I was able to expand the slit at the top of the cauldron and back the opening with a contrasting fabric, as well as tuck the wisp of smoke into the inside. Love how you can now see the contents of the cauldron just bubbling away.

I used Distress paint to add details to the scene, like the shadow below the cauldron, the bubbles rising above, and all the white pieces so that they stand out. And of course a witch’s brew needs a good spider, which is hanging to the side of the cauldron by a thread. I used a bit of alcohol ink on the spider to really make it shine.

I added a few hand-stitched accents to the cauldron handles, and edged the pillow with some favorite pom-pom trim. If you’d like any additional tips for using fabric with dies, check out some of my previous posts (These Old Bones) and (Skull & Crossbones Dolly).

Thanks so much for stopping by! Hope you all have a wonderful weekend ahead. I’m planning to head to Richmond to visit my boy. We’ve got belated birthday celebrating to do, and this ol’ mamma can’t wait!

P.S.- I’ve added a few Halloween spooks to my AudOnes Prims Shop. Come take a peek!

Tim Holtz Sizzix Chapter 3 Release- Frightful Things

Hello, crafty friends! Can you believe we are in mid August already? I’ve just spent the past couple of weeks getting both my kiddos moved and settled into their new apartments for the start of a new school year. And just like that, our summer is over. So here’s to moving on to fall things, with a project share today that I made for the Tim Holtz Sizzix Chapter 3 release. This time, a spooky Halloween card straight out of Edgar Allen Poe, made from several of the new seasonal die sets.

Both the Window Frame and the Fireside dies from the Chapter 3 release are absolutely perfect for scene building, and that’s what I used here to create this Gothic haunted house window design, perfect for a little Poe Raven midnight dreary. I love that you can use these sets for both creepy Halloween designs or jolly holiday scenes, depending on how you dress them up. And many of the new sets are scaled to fit, so really… the sky’s the limit as far as design.

For my card, I used a mix of die cuts from the Frightful Things and Regions Beyond die sets to build my spooky scene. The window itself was die cut several times from chipboard and stacked up to add some dimension. I made a starry midnight sky background from Distress ink and paint to back the window frame, and added a layer of transparency sheet to mimic glass. The cute ghost was sandwiched in between so he could peek through the pane.

I did a bit of light stenciling and ink splattering on the background. The strip of patterned paper made me think of old water-stained wallpaper you might find in Victorian days. The thin wavy edge on the left side of that is a border made using the new Festive Repeat dies. Old bones, burning candles, an Idea-ology sentiment sticker, and a bright-eyed raven dress up the window ledge and frame. This place looks definitely haunted for life.

Thanks so much for stopping by, friends! Wishing you all a wonderful weekend ahead!
