Happy Bird Day with the Sizzix Making Journal

Happy Wednesday, crafty friends! I think I’ve mentioned that I’ve been on a bird kick lately, right? Well, today I have yet another tweet bird project to share.. this time a card that was posted this week on the Sizzix UK blog The Making Journal, featuring my favorite die sets from the Tim Holtz Chapter 2 release.

The adorable birds from the Feathered Friends Thinlits die set has by far been my favorite set from the spring release. I love that they can be colored in so many variations to create many different species of birds, and they all turn out so beautifully. The Funky Wreath die set is the perfect companion set for these birds, and once again I’ve added in a wreath on my project today. I love dressing up the wreaths with small extras, like flowers or ribbons or bows. On this card, I made a messy nest for the bird with some wonky “greens” and natural twine. And added in a hand-stamped sentiment banner to finish the design.

It was recently my mother’s birthday.  She loves bird images and nature scenes, so this card was made specially for her. She’s getting quite the bird collection going, I must say!

I’ve got all the details and the complete step-by-step tutorial for this project up on The Making Journal blog, if you’d like to learn more.

Thanks so much for stopping by! Wishing you all a wonderful week!

Springtime with the Sizzix Making Journal

Hello, crafty friends, happy Friday! Hope you are all doing well, and I hope you managed to have a lovely Easter weekend, even with the quarantine orders to stay at home. It was very quiet here at my house, and has been throughout the week, but I must say… the days sure go by fast. And Finley and I are making the most of the beautiful springtime weather we’ve been having in between our days of wind and rain.

Speaking of springtime, today I am sharing this sweet spring-inspired home decor frame on the Sizzix UK blog, The Making Journal. This framed project uses three of the new Tim Holtz die sets from the Chapter 2 release, including my absolute favorite, Feathered Friends. I live on the East Coast, and love to see the bluebirds that return to my yard at this time of year. To me, they are a perfect harbinger of the spring season.

I love cost-effective decor projects, like this thrift-store frame re-do. I paid less than a dollar for this sweet green-striped frame, and by using my dies and supplies I already had on hand, I created this altered frame for next to no cost. How awesome is that?

If you’d like to learn more about this project, or check out the step-by-step tutorial, be sure to stop by The Making Journal blog. And as always, thanks so much for stopping by!

Happy Hour with Tim Holtz & Sizzix

Hello crafty friends, and happy April Fool’s Day! Hope everyone is keeping well!
Today is the official release of the 2020 Sizzix Chapter 2 collection, and I’m excited to share with you another project that I made for the Facebook Live reveal and Creativation show this past January. This is a little gift packing idea made with the new Happy Hour thinlits dies and the amazing 3D Brickwork texture fade.

Any Blue Moon beer drinkers out there? That’s exactly the look I was going for on this altered gift tin. I am definitely a beer girl, myself, and I would be so happy to receive a gift in this fun box. Love that this would work just as well for those challenging guy gifts as it does for the girls. Or change up the beer glass to an iced coffee or milk shake or lemonade or any other lovely fruity drink you can think of. Lots of possibilities here.

The Happy Hour die set comes with many different pieces, and you can see how much detail you can create with the layers. This beer glass contains four stacked shapes… one for the liquid, one for the glass, and two for the layered foam. And each orange slice is two stacked pieces, too. And check out the detail on that 3D embossing folder. So much great texture on this one.

I had this old white tin in my stash, and thought it would be perfect for holding some gift cash or gift cards, or any small gift item. I added black cardstock down the center of the tin, followed by layers of text print patterned paper and old book paper. The kraft tag was die cut with the new Squares Stacked Tiles die set to create the two window openings, and then embossed with the Brickwork folder. I rubbed Picket Fence Distress crayon and paint into the grooves, and I really like the plaster mortar effect it adds to the bricks. The windows were backed with Distress watercolor, and I did some water-coloring on the beer liquid pieces, too. The glass was die cut from a sheet of thick plastic packaging which I attached to the liquid lining with a thin line of Glossy Accents along the very bottom of the glass. The orange slices got a watercolor treatment, as well. And the beer foam was coated in Distress Grit Paste. Like I said, lots of fabulous texture on here.

The sentiment was die cut from watercolor cardstock using the Tiny Type Upper die set, part of the Chapter 1 release. And finally, the tag was added to the tin with ribbon and twine.

Check out the full Tim Holtz 2020 Sizzix Chapter 2 collection in the video below, if you’d like to see more. And thanks so much for stopping by! Be well!

To My Tweetheart with Tim Holtz & Sizzix Chapter 2 Release

Hello, crafty friends! I hope everyone is keeping well! In just a couple of days from now, (on April 1st, to be precise) the Tim Holtz 2020 Sizzix Chapter 2 collection will be officially released. Chapter 2 has some of my favorite die sets from this year, including the adorable new characters in the Colorize line. And I am super excited to have been able to create a few samples using these new dies for Tim’s Facebook Live sneak peek and the Creativation show this past January. Today I wanted to share one of those projects with you… a sweet, or should I say “tweet”, card featuring the new Feathered Friends Thinlits die set.

Feathered Friends is a fabulous layered die set that creates two different bird images, and I absolutely love how these birds look watercolored, like I’ve done here. My little birdie friend was colored to look like one of my most favorite birds, the robin, using  a combo of brown, black, and orange Distress inks. He is perched in a nest that I made with twine and the new Funky Wreath die set. The wreath has also been watercolored in Distress, and then inlaid into the center of my embossed frame.

The framework panel was inked in a light shade of Distress and embossed with an older Texture Fade of Tim’s called Lace. I inked the raised areas again in a slightly darker color to call extra attention to all that beautiful texture. The wreath was then die cut from the center, watercolored in a variety of green Distress, and placed back into the opening. There are additional pieces of the wreaths that can be die cut separately, and several of those were used to bulk up the corner of the nest. The frame was layered onto  text print paper and backed with more patterned paper and sanded Distress kraft stock cardstock.

I added machine stitching around the edge of the card, and a jumble of natural twine in the nest. A simple stamped sentiment strip finished the design.

If you haven’t had a chance yet, you can see the entire Tim Holtz Chapter 2 release in the video above. Do you have any favorites? Anything on your must-have list?

Thanks so much for stopping by! I’ll be back on Wednesday the 1st with another Chapter 2 project to celebrate the release. Hope to see you then!

Grand Adventure with Ranger Ink

Another month has zipped past, and here we are at summer already….  well, a few days shy of the official season, but the kiddos are off and it feels like summertime to me. Today I’m back to share a card that I made for a special feature article for Ranger in the springtime issue (issue 186) of Simply Cards & Papercraft Magazine. This bright butterfly card features lots of pretty colors of Ranger Distress, of course, and favorite dies and stamps from Tim Holtz. Seems very fitting for the season ahead.

That awesome butterfly is from the Flutter stamp set by Tim Holtz and Stamper’s Anonymous, and was die cut with the matching Sizzix die. I used a range of blue Distress inks to watercolor the image, and added white gel pen dots for detailing and a bit of black thread for antennae. The Garden Greens die cuts used for the foliage were watercolored with Distress, too. Sentiment is a mixture of Idea-ology metallic cardstock stickers with one of the Tim Holtz Shadow Script die sets.

Stitched Rectangle dies were used to create the inlaid frame. Basic black and white cardstock for the base and layers, with a bit of Distress cardstock for color. One of the awesome Tim Holtz shifter stencils (Diamonds) was used to make the fun angled panel in the background, too.

If you happened to pick up the spring Simply Cards & Papercraft issue, you’ll find the full step-by-step instructions for this card in the special Ranger insert.

Thanks for stopping by! Hope your summer is off to a great start, and is filled with many grand adventures!

Going Batty with Tim Holtz & Sizzix

Hi crafty friends! I’m sneaking back in with another project and some fun news today…. because let’s face it, once the holiday season hits there is so much to share. For those of you, like me, who are anxiously awaiting the Tim Holtz Sizzix Halloween release, I am so excited to let you know that the dies are now available at your favorite local retailer and online shops !

I was super fortunate to have received some of the new dies ahead of time to make samples for the reveal, and I can’t wait to start sharing with you the fun projects I created. Be sure to check out the video above for tons of fall and Halloween project ideas from a whole group of very talented designers who have been working hard behind the scenes to provide lots of inspiration for the season. Those of you who have been following me for awhile, can you pick out my projects?
I’d love to hear!
Let the spooks begin!

I don’t know how often one can say this, but I truly love every single die set from the new Halloween release.  When I was a young college student, I fell in love with Anne Rice’s vampire Lestat, so it seemed only fitting to start with this majestic guy today. This is the vampire from the new Ghoulish dies, a set of three silhouette-style images that also includes an awesome skeleton and monster figurine, as well as the bat used here.

Check out all the detail to the outline of this thinlits die. It’s truly amazing what can be done these days with simple dies. I cut my vampire several times from heavyweight watercolor cardstock, and stacked the shapes together to create some depth. The top layer was watercolored with Distress inks in a deep rich color palette of blood red and black. One fun thing about these dies is that you can keep the figures in a silhouette design, or add features to them, like I’ve done here.

The background was inked and stenciled using the Halloween Mixed Media dies from a previous release. I went with sort of a vintage color palette of Aged Mahogany and Victorian Velvet, with a bit of Antique Linen thrown in, reminiscent of those old horror movies from the 1950’s. Classic haunted mansion. The sentiment was die cut from black Distress cardstock using the new Alphanumeric Cutout Upper alpha dies. You may notice that I did a bit of stenciling on that panel as well, using the negative leftover shape from the Drip Edge die I used on the top of the card.

And speaking of that drip edge, what a great bloody drip line it makes when inked in Aged Mahogany Distress and dotted with Glossy Accents. I inked the card base layer with mahogany ink to match, and then pulled in black cardstock for the rest of the design. I love how a simple paper distressor and a bit of Hickory Smoke Distress Oxide adds instant age to even the darkest cardstock.

So what do you all think of the Halloween release? Is your wish-list a mile long, too? Hit the comments below and tell me what’s your must-haves for the year. And as always, thanks so much for stopping by!

Book Lover’s Schoolhouse Blueprint Tags

I’ve been having such fun seeing everyone post photos of their kiddos heading into the new school year. Although mine are already starting their second week back right now, I am still very much in back-to-school mode. We’ve had some big and exciting changes this month, with Pete entering pharmacy school, and both kids moving into their first apartments. And I have to say, back-to-school just got real for me as I watched my boy cross the stage to be presented his official white doctor’s coat in VCU’s White Coat ceremony this past weekend. What an emotional time that was, to see the young doctor that he will soon become.

I always like to start the school year out with some goody bags from home, and of course no care package could be complete in my mind without festive wrapping and treat tags. So once again, I’ve pulled out the adorable Schoolhouse Blueprint stamps by Tim Holtz to create a few more ready-made gift tags that are perfect for back to school.

Like the apple tags I shared last week, these book tags were die cut from Ranger Mixed Media Heavystock paper, stamped in Archival black ink, and watercolored with Distress inks. I kept to a primary school color palette here of yellow, blue, and red, with a bit of my favorite brown thrown in for good measure. And once again, there is an Alphanumeric sentiment, but die cut this time around in denim Textile Surfaces. To change things up, I switched out the background stencil from rulers to stars. And for a bit of a different twist, I added tab tops to the tags, instead of ribbon and string.

Hope the school year is off to a great start for those special kiddos and hard-working teachers out there!
And as always, thanks so much for stopping by!

Schoolhouse Blueprint- Back to School Tags

This is back to school week for all the kiddos here in my area, from elementary to high school, and even college for big kids, like mine. The last few days have been a whirlwind, getting Pete set up in Richmond for medical school…. and just this weekend setting up Nik in her new apartment right off campus. Life has been filled with toting and hauling, packing and bending, and sorting and organizing and cleaning. I hardly know if I’m coming, or going. But happily, both of my peanuts are settling in nicely to their new digs.

It doesn’t seem to matter how old my kiddos get…. I still like to send them off with little treats on their first days. And I’m always a sucker for pretty packaging, so perfect excuse to break out these adorable Schoolhouse Blueprint stamps by Tim Holtz and create a few back to school goody bag tags.

A good ol’ apple is just iconic for back to school, don’t you think? These cuties were stamped in black Archival ink onto tags die cut from Mixed Media Heavystock paper, and then watercolored with Distress inks. I am a committed Brushed Corduroy fan girl, but I challenged myself to use some different colors here, and I’m so glad I did. After hearing Tim Holtz say his favorite color of Distress is Old Paper on a recent Facebook live episode, I had to give it a try with this background watercolor wash, followed up by a bit of masking and stenciling. I really love how that touch of green in the color coordinates with my apple theme.

I added a touch of red Distress glitter to the highlights on the apples, and finished up with some simple A B C’s. I think we’re ready for school to begin!

Thanks so much for all your sweet comments and support on my last posts. It sure is tough on this old mamma to have her cubs move away. But I’m so proud of them, too. Bittersweet moments!
Hope to get caught up with all of you soon!

A Glorious Bouquet with Ranger Ink

The weather forecast calls for solid rain and thunderstorms over the next 8 days… so things are kind of gloomy here in my neck of the woods right now. Not at all summer-like. I’m already missing the sunshine and blue skies, so thought I would cheer things up here with a summery card to chase away the grey. A sweet floral birthday card that I have the great pleasure of sharing today over on the Ranger Ink blog.

I love this Glorious Bouquet stamp by Tim Holtz, and thought it would be perfect to use for my friend, Paige’s, July birthday. I stamped a portion of the floral image in brown Archival ink onto a panel of watercolor paper, and then colored it in with Distress inks and markers. Added a drop shadow around the branches with marker. And blended things smooth with a wet paintbrush.

A pair of dimensional frames made with some Tim Holtz dies gives a bit of a shadowbox feel to the design. I inked the frames in a pretty Distress combo of Tattered Rose and Victorian Velvet, with some Brushed Corduroy thrown in because, well…. that’s my favorite. Ranger opaque crackle paste was rubbed into the corners, then brushed with perfect pearls for a soft shimmery finish.

I love how this card turned out. So perfectly shabby sweet, like only Distress can do. As always, I’ve got the full step-by-step tutorial up on the Ranger Ink blog, if you’d like to learn more.

Thanks so much for stopping by, friends! Hope you all had a wonderful weekend! I got together with some of my scrappy gal pals for a day of cropping…. but then found out my car battery was dead. But what’s life without a bit of sweet and a bit of sour, right? Hope you all have lots of sweet in the week ahead!

My Creative Time 67th Edition Release Week- Sea You Soon

Hi everyone! It’s sneak peek week over at My Creative Time for their 67th Edition Release, and I am so excited to be joining in on the fun with a special guest designer project. Today is day two of peeks, and Emma is showcasing a new stamp and die set called Sea You Soon.

This new set has some of the cutest little sea creatures you have ever seen, and a great variety of sweet and puny sentiments to go along. I made an ocean scene for my turtle and his fish friends, complete with embossed sea waves from the Sea You Soon set, water-colored with a variety of Distress inks. The images were stamped onto watercolor paper and colored with the inks, too, before being die cut with the matching dies and popped onto the card base with foam adhesive.

I stamped one of the sentiments from the set directly onto the panel, and then die cut with the previously released Stitched Rectangular Frame Dies & More set. The outer frame was die cut with the rectangle die set, as well. The papers are from Photo Play Paper’s Nautical Bliss line.

***Sneak Peek giveaway!***
