Good Heart with Ranger Ink

Happy Monday, crafty friends! Hope you all had a wonderful weekend and that your week is getting off to a great start. Today I’m sharing a mixed media art tag that I made for the Ranger Ink Projects Page featuring the fabulous new color of Distress, Speckled Egg.

To make this tag, I began with two graduated sizes of tag shapes which were inked and sprayed and stenciled, and finally stacked together for lots of great dimension. I think I’ve mentioned being obsessed with creating old-world stucco finishes with Ranger crackle texture paste, and I’ve done that here once again. I really do love that paste. I dab it on thick with my fingertip, and then let it do it’s thing. Some areas get heavily sanded for a plaster-like finish, and some stay as is with lots of great crackle effect.

I added some greenery and  felt “branches” using the new Tim Holtz Festive Stems Bigz die. The Idea-ology paper doll was colored lightly with Distress Oxide inks and then nestled into the greens. Love how they look like they are towering over the children’s heads, like some secret garden gone wild.

The tags were tied with ribbon and trim, and a quick sentiment was added with an Idea-ology quote band, painted and buffed to a polished shine.
If you would like to learn more about this layered Distress tag, you can find all the instructions and a complete step-by-step tutorial over on the Ranger Ink Projects Page.

Beside the Sea with Ranger Ink

Happy Friday, crafty friends, and welcome back to the blog! Summer is in full swing here today with this beach-inspired home decor project that I made this week for the Ranger Ink Project Page. This mixed-media piece is filled with sand and sea images and real seashells I’ve collected over the years, in a tropical summertime color palette of Distress Oxides, Inks, and new Embossing Glazes that I adore.

It seems like every time I go to the beach, I end up bringing home at least one container of shells. And most of the time, those shells sit in those little baggies or bottles for years, ignored. So happy I finally broke some of them out to add to this home decor plaque. I might not be making any actual trips to the beach anytime soon, but this brings back many happy memories and is a great way to incorporate some souvenirs into your decorating for the season.

I love the look of text print on just about anything. Adds some interest to an otherwise plain surface, like the background of this plaque frame. I simply added a layer of patterned paper to the wood plaque, and then proceeded to create an ocean view with lots of ink blending and masking, water droplets and the dimensional texture of Distress Crackle paste.

Then layers of coral branches and shells…. both real and paper versions. A bit of cheesecloth for extra texture, all finished off with a Tiny Type sentiment. Oh, how I long to be beside the sea! But perhaps for now, beachy decorations are the next best thing.

If you’d like to learn more about this project, I’ve got the complete step-by-step tutorial up on the Ranger Ink Project Page. Thanks so much for stopping by! Wishing you all a fabulous weekend!

You’re a Cutie Pie with the Sizzix Making Journal

Happy Monday, crafty friends, and happy first of June! This weekend, I had the great pleasure of posting an altered tag tutorial over on the Sizzix UK blog, The Making Journal. And today I wanted to share this cutie pie project, featuring the adorable Gertrude the giraffe die set, here with you, too.

Tags are one of my absolute favorite projects to make, as I always find them useful for so many occasions. This sweet tag with the new Gertrude the giraffe Colorize die makes me think of the adorable zoo animals that are often used for baby gifts and décor, so I went with that theme in mind while creating this tag. This project uses several Tim Holtz die sets from both Chapters 1 and 2, and I love how well the whimsical styles work together. The Doodle Art background plays beautifully with a Media Marks hillside, and creates a perfectly little outdoorsy scene for all your favorite critters. I think any of the playful Colorize animals from Chapter 1 and 2 would look great on here. And think how fun a whole row of these tags together would be.

My Mom made a wall hanging out of felt that had a giraffe very much like this that hung in my brother’s room when he was a babe, so this project is filled with nostalgia for me. Isn’t it funny how simple bits of paper can bring back so many memories?

You can check out all the details and step-by-step tutorial for this tag on the Sizzix Making Journal, if you’d like to learn more.

Hug your people, friends! And sending out lots of hugs from me to you!
Thanks for stopping by!

Happy Mother’s Day with Ranger Ink

Happy Saturday, crafty friends! This past week I had the great pleasure of creating a Mother’s Day project tutorial for the Ranger Ink Project Page. And since this is Mother’s Day weekend for those of us in the States, I wanted to share my project here with you, too.

This larger 5×7 card was created with my mother in mind. She loves bird images and nature scenes, so of course I thought these fabulous Tim Holtz birds from the Feathered Friends die set would be perfect for her. And in this larger size format, this card could be displayed as is, or placed into a standard 5×7 frame to be used as a home decor piece all year round.

I’ve become quite addicted to these birds. I think they are my top favorite set from Tim’s Chapter 2 2020 release. I often pair them with another favorite die set, Funky Wreath, and I’ve done that again here. Although these dies cut tradition round wreath shapes, I’ve found they can be easily manipulated into other forms when snipped apart and softened with a bit of water coloring. I added in some small die cut flowers from an older set, and personalized the card with a Tiny Type alphabet sentiment.

My mom has already received this card, so no spoilers here. Love you, Mom!

As always, I’ve got the complete step-by-step tutorial for this project up on the Ranger Ink Project Page, if you’d like to learn more.

So Lucky with Ranger Ink

Hello, crafty friends! I hope this blog post finds you all safe and well. I know this situation we are all facing right now with the Coronavirus is very unsettling. But I hope that you are holding up as best as possible. All we can do is stay positive, right? Stay at home and wash our hands. And be thankful for creative outlets at times like these. I do find that doing a little something creative each day really does help. So today I wanted to share one of my latest crafty projects, a sweet Theodore bear altered frame home decor piece that I made recently for the Ranger Ink Projects Page.

Theodore bear is just so stinkin’ cute! He is from the ‘new’-ish Colorize die line from Tim Holtz and Sizzix, part of the Chapter 1 2020 release. Really love these latest characters, and am so happy that the Colorize line has been simplified a bit this year.

For this frame, I made a outdoorsy natural background scene using Distress Oxide ink and a few garden green dies from the Tim Holtz collection. The lucky clover in Theodore’s mouth was made using a small heart die from the Falling Hearts die set. The sentiment is a combo of the new Tiny Type Alphanumeric dies and an older script word set.

I have become a bit addicted to creating an old-world Venetian plaster-like finish using Distress Crackle Texture paste. It’s one of my current favorite techniques, and I love the soft shabby crackled texture it adds to the sky background here. Great way to add extra detail without taking anything away from the main attraction, Mr. Theodore Bear.

If you’d like to learn more about my process, I have the complete tutorial up on the Ranger Ink blog. Just click here.

Keep well, friends! Thanks so much for stopping by!

Mr Snowman Gift Card Holder with Sizzix

Hello crafty friends! It’s the day before Halloween and my house is still filled with pumpkins and spooks, but as is often the case in the craft world, it’s time to move on to the next season. So today I’m super excited to be doing something I haven’t done in quite some time…. sharing a project on the Sizzix blog. This time, it’s the Sizzix UK blog The Making Journal and my project share is this sweet Mr. Snowman gift card holder tag.

The focus of my project was featuring Tim Holtz dies from the latest Sizzix Chapter 4 release, and I used two of my favorite new sets on this tag today. This is the adorable Mr. Snowman die from the new Colorize line, and the background was made with the Alpine set which makes incredible scenery for so many different designs. The tag and all the pieces were die cut from a combo of Distress watercolor cardstock and Distress Kraft Stock cardstock, and I went in with Distress Oxides and Inks to add color and definition to all the layers and pieces. Dyed trim was added to the top of the tag, and I made a quick and easy sentiment banner with simple twine and die cut Alphanumeric Label letters.

I call this a 2-fer project, because it really is two projects rolled into one. Not only is this adorable snowman tag a great packaging gift tag or decorative art tag, it also does double duty as a gift card holder. I love time saving ideas like this when the busy holiday season comes around.
If you’d like to learn more about the process, or check out the full step-by-step tutorial, be sure to pop on over to the Sizzix UK blog The Making Journal.

Boooooo Happy Halloween with Ranger Ink

We’re coming down to the wire, friends! Halloween is just days away. But last minute as it is, I’m back with one last Halloween project for the season. This time, a pair of haunted gift tags that I made for the Ranger Ink blog.

I just love these two silly ghosts, don’t you? They are from the Frightful Things die set from the Tim Holtz Sizzix Chapter 3 release, one of my favorite sets from this year’s holiday release. I paired the ghosts with spiderwebs from the same set, and popped them all against crisp black tags for contrast. The negative spaces were filled in with letters from the Alphanumeric Labels die set, inked in soft lilac Distress for a classic Halloween color combo.

These will be so cute tying up some Halloween goody bags for those special spooks. Happy Halloween, everyone!

And as always, I’ve got the full step-by-step tutorial for this project up on the Ranger Ink project page, if you’d like to learn more!

Let it Snow with Ranger Ink

Happy Monday, crafty friends! Brrrr, has it ever been frigid in my neck of the woods lately. The “polar vortex” has certainly visited us here in the heart of North Carolina this past week… much to the chagrin of me who is spending quite more time shivering and shaking outdoors than I’d wish with a puppy who is completely immune to the cold. Unfortunately, I’ve heard there’s much more of the same looming ahead as we close out January. Seems like the perfect time to share this winter-themed card project and tutorial that I had up on the Ranger Ink blog last month.

This snowy card was made with the Tim Holtz Paper Snowflakes die set by Sizzix, with a fun inlay die cutting technique backed by the pretty sparkle of Ranger glittered embossing powder. Now normally I am a neutral-loving gal, as many of you know by now. But there’s something about this bright color combo that just feels so perfect for winter. The blend of blue and purple Distress Oxide inks makes me think of an evening sky in the midst of a snowfall. And of course that touch of glittery sparkle feels like freshly fallen snow. Surely a combination that will chase away any winter blahs.

It’s not often that I shy away from patterned paper, but that’s just what I did with this card made solely from a mix of heavyweight white cardstock and watercolor cardstock that was inked, inked and spritzed, or simply embossed with tinsel powder. The only extra embellishment is the gilded rub-on sentiment.

I’ve got the complete step-by-step tutorial up on the Ranger Ink blog, if you’d like to learn more. Thanks so much for stopping by! Hope you’re managing to keep warm and snug inside!

Sizzix 2019 Chapter 1 Dies- Robotic by Tim Holtz

Hi Friends! I’m starting out 2019 with the worst blogger of the year award. It’s definitely not for lack of fun new projects to share…. but simply because I can’t seem to get near a computer these days. Not with a new little puppy needing and demanding my attention every moment. Just like a newborn baby, it seems.

But of course the big Creativation trade show is coming up this weekend, and that means there are tons of awesome new products coming out on the market right now. Including the new Tim Holtz Chapter 1 dies sets he sneaked on a Facebook Live event this past Friday. If you didn’t catch the news, Sizzix has revamped their releases into four different chapters that will be spread throughout the year. Chapter 1 dies are available right now! And Chapter 2 will be revealed at Creativation this weekend. SO much fun!

Part of the Chapter 1 release is this adorable new robot die set and the cool retro background cutouts you see here, from a set called Retro Repeat. Both of these sets have gone straight to the top of my new list of favorites because there is just so much you can do with these. Those robots are stinkin’ cute, and I love that there are gobs of dies included in the set for customizing your creations. The cover art on the packaging gives you some great ideas for piecing the bots, but really… the sky is the limit with these guys. Once you start assembling the parts, it can be quite hard to stop. 😀

If you caught Tim’s FB Live last week, you’ll have seen the creative possibilities of the Retro Repeat set, too. Like his recently released shifters stencils, these dies are designed to shift up and down, or side to side, to continue the patterns as far as you wish, and you end up with these cool negative die cut panels that make some really unique backgrounds. And the funky patterns pair perfectly with the new robots and atomic elements from the Chapter 1 release.

There are so many awesome new products on the horizon! My wish list is a mile long! How about you all? Have you started your Creativation 2019 must-have lists yet? I’d love to hear what’s on them!

I’m so sorry for my absence in blogland these days! Hope the pup gives me more free time soon, and HOPE to be around to visit, too! Until then, have an amazing week, my friends!

Trick or Treat with Tim Holtz & Sizzix

Boo-Yeah, Friends! Happy Monday! I’m back today with a spooky card share featuring new seasonal products from the 2018 Tim Holtz and Sizzix Halloween release. This is the silly sweet Frightening Faces die set, along with the new Halloween Shadow Script set, a bold sentiment set that is sure to be a stand-out on your crafty projects this year.

Frightening Faces creates a myriad of silly faces, and one thing that I really love about it is that you can use either the positive or the negative shapes, giving you lots of design options. You all may remember the owl card I made awhile back that uses a mix of the positive face pieces to build the actual owl body (click here if you missed that post). And today I’m using the negative die cut shapes on a dark and moody panel made with Distress Oxide inks. I love the cutaway faces that creates, of course enhanced greatly, in my humble opinion, by the addition of googly eyes.

I used the negative cutouts of the Halloween Shadow Script set to make die cut openings for the sentiment, too. And then stacks of the script positives, die cut from silver metallic cardstock beneath and crisp black cardstock above, make the sentiment really pop. The silver layer on the bottom is a very subtle touch, but adds a bit of surprise when viewed from the side.

The card base itself is made up of several layers, starting with silver Distress Metallic cardstock that has been sanded for age. Layer two is white cardstock, edged all around in Idea-ology Halloween design tape. You’ll notice I used some additional pieces of tape to “hold down” the top layer, too. Finally comes the last layers of Distress watercolor cardstock, inked up in Halloween colors of Distress. The greens are a mix of Twisted Citron and Mowed Lawn Distress inks. The top panel is made with Oxides in Wilted Violet and Hickory Smoke. And while the inks were still wet, I trickled on spots of silver embossing powder, which were carefully heat set from below.

A single poison label cut from the Halloween Paper Stash adds a fun “tab” to the top of the card. And I finished off with Idea-ology hex nuts in the corners. Those guys totally remind me of the bolts on Frankenstein… so fitting for a little Halloween spook, don’t you think?

Thanks so much for stopping by! Hope your week is off to a great start!

P.S.- I started up my annual Halloween Haunted House Tour this weekend. Keep scrolling down a post if you missed day one, and would like to catch up… or simply click here.
