Tweet Tweet with Tim Holtz Patchwork Bird

Happy Friday, friends! I’ve been on a bird kick lately with my crafty projects. So perfect time to share this tweet bird-inspired fabric project with you… A pillow that I made some time back featuring the Tim Holtz Handmade Alpha XL and Patchwork Bird Bigz dies.

I love making fabric projects with my dies, and I was really excited when Tim Holtz asked me to make some secret fabric creations for his Facebook Live Chapter 4 2019 reveal.  I really had fun with this pillow. There are so many layers and fabulous details on these patchwork birds, and since it is a Bigz die, it’s super easy to cut thicker materials with it, like the wool felt and fabrics I used here.

I tried something new with this pillow, which is using Distress Paints to create a hand-painted watercolor background. I sketched in very loose tree branches and leaves, painted in with muted earthy tones of Distress greens and browns. I really like the framework that gave to the birds, and how it worked perfectly to ground the images into a scene. The bird pieces, themselves, were die cut from a variety of felt and fabric and pieced together. I added lots of hand-stitched details to enhance their patchwork feel.

I added some favorite pompom trim around the edge of the pillow, and topped it with a messy bow made from thick twine, vintage millinery flowers and velvet leaves, and a vintage button. So very tweet!

Be well, friends! Thanks for stopping by!
