Hello, crafty friends! Thanks so much for stopping by, and welcome to the Tim Holtz Creativation 2019 Blog Hop! Today I am joining in with a group of very talented designers to share a closer look at some of the booth projects that were showcased at Creativation in January featuring all the fabulous new products from the Tim Holtz collection.
I had the great pleasure of creating a few projects for the Tim Holtz Sizzix booth, and today I am excited to share my favorites from the show… a set of travel notebook journals made with the new Tiny Travel Globe die set from the upcoming Chapter 2 Sizzix release.
The Tiny Travel Globes are a continuation of the ever popular miniature snowglobe set that Tim released for the holidays this past year, and yes, these images are truly tiny and amazingly detailed. Each icon measures from about .5″ to 1″ in height, and all the little layered details you see here are individual die cuts. But never fear… all the pieces for each image come together on one die for super easy assembly.
There are the most adorable dimensional plastic domes that work with this set to create very lifelike 3D snow globe designs, but I wanted to show how these die cuts could be used in other ways. Each journal I created combines three or more images from the set into little framed travel scenes, perfect for documenting your favorite vacation sights and memories.
These travel notebooks measure about 3.5 “x 5.5”, and come in a pack of six from Amazon, making them super convenient and inexpensive to create in bulk. To add that aged and distressed appearance we all love so well, I started by adding some Distress ink splatters and Ranger black embossing powder to the edges of the journal before going over the cover with sand paper to scuff it up a bit. Next comes a layer of heavyweight cardstock, splattered and stamped in a really cool chevron-style print from the Flurry & Pine (CMS312) stamp set from Stamper’s Anonymous. I changed up the colors of each of the background to add a bit of variety to the set. Love the sort of primary-school color palette I used of red, yellow, green, and blue Distress ink. The backgrounds were then embellished with big chat stickers, and “held” in place with Idea-ology design tape.
The black frames were made by nesting a Stitched Ovals die in the center of a Stitched Rectangle die. I used the Tonic Studios paper distresser tool up scratch up the edges of the frame, and then added a bit of Hickory Smoke Distress Oxide ink with an ink blending tool. If you look very closely, you may notice some faint images that look like postage marks (Haberdashery CMS105) that I stamped randomly around the frames in Black Soot ink. And for more texture, black embossing powder was dry sprinkled onto the frames and very carefully heat set from the back with my heat tool.
The images for each vignette were all die cut and pieced from sanded Distress Kraft Stock cardstock, and I used additional pieces of the same cardstocks to help build the rest of the scenes. To keep the set uniform, I created sunny blue skies for each setting using Tumbled Glass and Salty Ocean Distress inks on watercolor paper, and then layered on the additional detail pieces. Once you get started, it’s really fun to see where your imagination goes.
Each journal is tied closed with twine and fastened in a bow with a Idea-ology Typed Token. To make the tokens look as old as the rest of the journal, I dabbed them with Alcohol inks in Caramel and Rust. White Distress Crayon rubbed into the recesses really helps the lettering stand out. Last detail on each notebook is a destination sentiment strip die cut using the new Alphanumeric Label dies that are also coming out in the upcoming Chapter 2 release.
Thanks so much for stopping by, and enjoy the rest of the hop! But before you go, be sure to leave a comment here, and all along the hop, for your chance to win one of three amazing prize giveaways. Please leave comments before February 9th at midnight PST and 3 winners will be announced on February 10th.

These are soooo cute! And I love the treatment of the black frames… is that just cardstock? The treatment definitely gives it a leather feel. So great!
Hi Gina, yes, that is just black cardstock. But it gets that time-worn leather look when you add a bit of embossing powder on top, and then take a sander to the whole thing. 😀
That is so awesome! Thanks so much for the added detail and response!
