The kids are due to arrive sometime later today, and I am so, so, SO excited! It’s been almost half a year since Peter has been home, and that long since they’ve both been here together… so this holiday is very special, indeed.

Of course I couldn’t have the kids here without adding some holiday touches to the house. And before things get too crazy in the kitchen, I thought I’d share a few photos of my decor with you, too. I hope I can spread some holiday cheer to all of my bloggy friends, both far and near.

I usually have my Thanksgiving dinner plans ironed out well in advance, but this year I’m definitely flying by the seat of my pants. Both of my kids went vegetarian this summer, and I’m having to come up with a whole new menu. I’ve been experimenting all week, with varying levels of success. Okay, if I’m totally honest, I’ve been bombing out so far…..

I guess that’s what happens when you’re trying out things you’ve never done before. All I know is that I’m out of my element. Good thing I’m able to laugh about it all.

Earlier this week I made “beef-less” beef stew, but I tell you what….. I wasn’t fooled. The mushrooms that were supposed to be the meat substitute tasted more like rubber tires to me. Fail.

Then I experimented with butternut squash soup. The recipe called for one teaspoon of cayenne pepper, and I really hemmed and hawed about that. I mean, I know better than that. But the author must know more about vegetarian dishes than me… so in the pepper went. And I darn near burned the roof of my mouth clean off. Epic fail.

Yesterday I made homemade hummus for the first time. The recipe called for four cloves of garlic, and let me tell you what…. four cloves of raw garlic are enough to kill a vampire. I left for a doctor’s appointment right after I was done, and sat there positively radiating garlic smells in the office. Apologies for that, all around! 😀

Last night’s experiment with pumpkin apple gingerbread muffins went over much better, and today’s game plan is to make the pie, which I’m much more comfortable with. Hopefully that puts me back on an even playing field.

I still have several new recipes to try for tomorrow’s main course. I decided upon mac & cheese and zucchini pie, both of which I’ve never made. My mac & cheese experience has thus far been with a blue box. Not even sure I’ve ever eaten zucchini pie.

It’s all a bit nerve-wracking, but for the most part, I’ve really been enjoying myself. All this experimentation means one thing, that my kids will be home soon. Hope your house is filled with your loved ones soon, too.

  1. Very lovely decorations, Audrey! What a sweet loving Mom you are to experiment with vegetarian dishes! I’m sure you will come up with something delicious! My son is coming home today. I baked two pumpkin pies this morning. My hubby usually makes the turkey. My son is bringing a cranberry salad and he likes to make a creamed corn dish. Enjoy time with Pete and Missy!   2. Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and birthday, Audrey! Those type of diets would never work for me–my digestive system is too sensitive. It would probably kill me! Hope whatever you had was enjoyable! Perhaps the kiddos could cook dishes that they eat.

  3. Oh wow. What a challenge you had. It could have been worse if they were vegan though. With eggs and cheese, you can do soooooo much more. 😉
