Sizzix Tutorial- An Elephant Never Forgets

Hi everyone! Happy Friday! So last time, I mentioned that July is a big birthday month for me. Today, the girls and I are getting together to celebrate the birthday of my dear friend Paige, and of course you know that means that some pretty gift packaging is in order. ‘Cause you all know I can’t let a festive occasion go by without some festive gift wrap.

Do you ever see something, and immediately it makes you think of someone special? Well, that’s just what happened to me as soon as I laid eyes on this adorable new Sizzix Elephant die from Brenda Walton, with my friend Paige. Now to be totally truthful, it’s actually Paige’s husband who’s had a longtime love affair with elephants, dating back to his earliest childhood toy. But that sweet toy elephant, which he still has by the way, could melt a heart of stone, and yes…. I absolutely couldn’t resist adorning her birthday package with my own little elephant.

This elephant makes such a super cute shaped tag, for a bit of a different twist on the standard gift tag. And better yet, it’s really easy to put together when you have a die that does all the work for you. I think this die just screams for paper piecing, with all the individual shapes that make up the whole. And that’s just what I’ve done today. I’ve got a quick tutorial to share with you. So let’s take a closer look.

To begin, of course you need some cute gift wrap. Now most of you know that I am a complete sucker for brown paper packages. I think they work great for anyone, anytime, and love that they can be dressed up or down for just about any occasion. Today I’ve added some bright and happy polka dots to my paper using a good old Distress Paint dabber. So easy! You gotta love that!

Here’s a peek at the adorable Elephant Bigz L die and the assortment of patterned paper I put together to use. The papers are all leftovers from the Crop and Create: Delivered spring kit…. a beautiful mixture of Crate Paper Open Book and American Crafts Shimelle. I’m giving myself bonus points for using up my scraps. 😉

Since the elephant is a Bigz L die, all you need for die cutting is your Big Shot machine and a pair of Standard Cutting Pads. Use this standard Sizzix die cutting sandwich: Standard Cutting Pad, die (cutting side up), paper, Standard Cutting Pad.

Die cut the elephant once from plain cardstock and once from patterned paper. Set the cardstock piece aside for now. Die cut the elephant accessories (ear, blanket, saddle) from contrasting patterned paper. To help define each individual part, edge each piece with brown Distress Ink using an ink blending tool.

Now comes the fun of putting your elephant together. Adhere the blanket and saddle to the top of the elephant first, and then add the ear over the top. I adhered the top of the ear flat against the elephant’s head, but added a bit of foam adhesive under the bottom so the ear would jut out just a bit. A candy dot for the eye. Some rick-rack trim for detail.

Finished off with a bit of machine stitching…. cause it’s all about the details, right?

Now to hide all the ugly stitching on the backside, adhere the cardstock elephant we die cut before to the back of the patterned version.

Punch a hole in the elephant’s back and thread with baker’s twine. Add a cute stamped greeting. I used the adorable new Happy Birthday to You Framelits w/ Stamps set by Lori Whitlock.

Die cut the flag banner from the Elephant die from cardstock. Personalize it with another cute stamped greeting, this time from the Damask Greetings Interchangeable Stamps from Jen Long.

The banner flag does come with a matching pole, but I decided to throw a little whimsy in by using an actual stick from my garden. Love added a little rugged touch in with my cute.

Look at those stinkin’ cute little feet! I can barely stand it!

So fun! I just love it! Can’t wait to see Paige’s face!

Thanks so much for stopping by, my friends! Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!

  8. Wowee, so much to love about this. You know I love that Kraft polka-dot paper and thanks for the tip on how to make it! The ric-rac trim on the elephant is creative genius! Best of all is the Audrey-style bow. I could’ve seen this from a mile away and I would know it was created by you! (okay, maybe not a mile, my eyesight is not that good anymore) BTW, loving your patriotic blog header.
